The SB Nation NBA sites conducted a mock draft last week and The Bird Writes selected guard Shaedon Sharpe from the University of Kentucky.
No prospect that’s expected to get selected in the lottery oozes more boom or bust potential than Shaedon Sharpe. The 18-year-old rocketed up draft boards after his play last summer to become the No. 1 recruit of the 2022 high school graduating class before getting reclassified after enrolling early at the University of Kentucky. Since then, he hasn’t played a lick of competitive basketball, making it extremely hard to evaluate and rank him.
The Pelicans, thanks to possessing certifiable star power and depth on the roster, are in as good of a position as any team to take a swing on such an unknown, especially with Dyson Daniels and Bennedict Mathurin off this board. New Orleans has shooting, defensive and playmaking needs, and both of those players would have checked some boxes, but if Sharpe fully develops, he could raise the floor of a team led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram the highest.
There were no trades allowed for this exercise and only the first round was involved.
We’ll soon post a more in-depth look at Sharpe in an article highlighting our favorite choices for the Pelicans at No. 8, but for now, please peruse Ricky O’Donnell’s latest mock draft, highlighting every team’s likeliest pick as well as their best pick.
