2022 NBA Draft: Dyson Daniels and Bennedict Mathurin gaining steam to Pelicans

Mock drafts seem to be settling on two names for New Orleans

With the 2022 NBA Draft just days away, there’s a growing consensus on several prospects to the New Orleans Pelicans at the eighth overall pick.

Although ESPN’s Jonathan Givony selected Shaedon Sharpe, much of the rest of the industry mocked either Dyson Daniels or Bennedict Mathurin to the Pelicans this past week.

Our very own Ricky O’Donnell of SB Nation wrote that Daniels makes the most sense for the Pelicans.

Daniels has the potential to be a lockdown defender who can smother smaller guards with his quick feet and agility. New Orleans could use another high-level defender in the lineup with Zion Williamson set to return, and Daniels showed enough offensive improvement in the second half of the season as a playmaker and spot-up shooter to warrant this pick.

CBS Sports sent Daniels to New Orleans, with Mathurin, Jeremy Sochan and Ousmane Dieng following him in successive order.

Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer also penciled in Daniels to the Pelicans, writing, “New Orleans could use a big playmaker who can defend multiple positions, and Daniels is rising up draft boards because of his improved jumper.”

Hoopshype’s Michael Scotto picked Mathurin to New Orleans, adding that the three teams directly above the Pelicans in the draft (Pistons, Pacers and Trail Blazers) have worked out the Arizona product. He also mentioned that New Orleans has received multiple interest in the eighth overall pick and “are willing to listen to offers.”

The Sporting News posted their latest mock draft earlier today and had Mathurin going to New Orleans as well.

In case you missed it, Daniels and Mathurin proved to be The Bird Writes’ favorite two prospects for the Pelicans. It’ll be interesting, however, to see if either one or both will be available at No. 8.

Mauthrin, Daniels and Sharpe have the highest odds of coming off the board at No. 5 after Jaden Ivey and Keegan Murray, per DraftKings. This makes a lot of sense as the latest mock drafts seem to indicate this trio sits in a tier below Jabari Smith Jr., Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, Ivey and Murray, but consistently above names like AJ Griffin, Jalen Duren, Johnny Davis, Sochan and Dieng.

Who are you betting will land on the New Orleans Pelicans?
