The SB Nation NBA sites conducted a mock draft last week and The Bird Writes selected 6’9 forward Franz Wagner from the University of Michigan.
If the 10th overall pick is kept, the Pelicans will seek out a versatile rookie who complements their two cornerstones in Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. Franz Wagner projects to be an ideal fit, offering in time a valuable 3-and-D component but with upside. Despite spending two years at Michigan, he’ll only turn 20 in August. Additionally, there’s a real chance he develops into an above average playmaker — Wagner finished with a better AST:TOV ratio than many shot creators who will be selected ahead of him in this draft, including Giddey, Green, Cunningham and Suggs.
There were no trades allowed for this exercise and only the first round was involved, so the Pelicans’ four second rounders were not able to be utilized.
We’ll soon post a more in-depth look at Wagner in an article highlighting our favorite choices for the Pelicans at the 10th pick, but for now, please peruse Ricky O’Donnell’s article where he ranks the 30 best players in the 2021 NBA Draft.
