The New Orleans Pelicans tip off in less than an hour against the Dallas Mavericks, and between fans and media alike, much of the focus will be on Luka Doncic. However, it would behoove Stan Van Gundy’s troops to pay just as much attention to his teammates.
The Mavericks are 9-4 when Luka has posted 9+ assists in a game, 3-10 when he hasn’t. (He did not play on Jan. 3 in a loss to the Bulls.)
While it’s ultimately a make or miss league, the Pelicans have to keep the number of open looks for Dallas to a minimum. Let Lonzo Ball or Josh Hart primarily be tasked with keeping Luka at bay so that Tim Hardaway Jr. or someone else goes off for an efficient 25+ points.
