Game Thread: Pelicans to face another short-handed squad, with the Wizards missing Russell Westbrook and seven other players

If New Orleans loses tonight, should David Griffin consider making a trade asap?

The New Orleans Pelicans will face a Washington Wizards team tonight that will be without eight players on their roster, including Russell Westbrook (rest) and Rui Hachimura (health and safety protocols).

Stan Van Gundy stated in pregame that he doesn’t like it when opponents are short-handed as it can create an air of complacency in a locker room, among other things. However, Washington will have Bradley Beal in action, one of the best players in the game today.

Will the Pelicans fail to bring the requisite effort and focus after finding themselves in a very similar situation against the Timberwolves this past Saturday which resulted in a disappointing defeat? Let’s hope not.

Losing eight of nine games should be more than enough of a wakeup call for the Pelicans. If not, maybe David Griffin should consider accepting one of the trade offers sitting on his table sooner rather than later.

The current combination on New Orleans roster isn’t working, fans are upset and we’re not even through a quarter of the 2020-21 schedule yet. Maybe dealing one of Lonzo Ball, Eric Bledsoe or JJ Redick now pays an immediate benefit or two.

For more on tonight’s matchup, please give our preview a read, and if you haven’t yet, David Fisher’s article that takes a closer look at Ball and Redick, which includes a few trade scenarios.
