The New Orleans Pelicans announced yesterday that the franchise is taking suggestions from fans on potential names for their soon-to-be G League affiliate operating in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Erie Bayhawks in Pennsylvania currently serve as New Orleans’ home base of G League operations, but the plan is for the 2019-20 Pelicans’ expansion team to relocate to Birmingham, Alabama for the start of the 2021-22 season, provided the $123 million renovation of Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex is completed on time.
“This is a great way for the community to share the names that they think would represent the city of Birmingham and this exciting new team,” said Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha. “From the beginning, we’ve said that we want the city of Birmingham to be involved in this process. This allows them the opportunity to support the team and we are eagerly waiting to see the submissions.”
If you have a good suggestion or two, please be sure to pass the information along at THIS LINK. Considering there doesn’t exist a specific name for baby pelicans, you’re going to have to go in different direction and either make it relatable in another way to the New Orleans Pelicans or perhaps to Birmingham and its surrounding region.
You have until 5 p.m. on December 23rd to submit any recommendations. The Pelicans are expected to announce the new name of their Birmingham G League affiliate sometime during the first quarter of 2021.
