Game 31: Carmelo Anthony’s injury status could determine outcome of matchup between Pelicans and Trail Blazers

New, comments

Balanced scoring led New Orleans to a victory over Portland last time. What will it take this time round?

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at New Orleans Pelicans Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans have won just seven times in their first thirty games, but one of those victories came against these Portland Trail Blazers.

Back on November 19th, New Orleans notched their second largest winning margin of the season to date when they knocked off Portland 115-104 in Carmelo Anthony’s first game in nearly a year’s time.

Since that loss, however, Portland has played decently, going 9-6 and moving up into the eighth spot of the Western Conference. And for those curious, Carmelo Anthony has played better than any run of the mill midseason free agent signing, posting the Blazers third-best positive plus/minus to go along with a line of 16.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.9 blocks.

So yeah, that’s why Carmelo’s questionable injury status for tonight’s contest versus the Pelicans is a rather important variable.

Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum are always a handful, but if Portland can consistently rely on a third scorer, they make for a much harder opponent — especially for a Pelicans team who were at full strength outside of Zion Williamson but still managed to lose to the Golden State Warriors last Friday.
