According to Zach Lowe, the New Orleans Pelicans may soon be privy to Nick Young’s destination plans.
Another free agent expected to make his choice today or tomorrow: Nick Young, with GSW and Pelicans among leading bidders, sources say— Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA) July 4, 2017
Young was first connected to the New Orleans Pelicans on the very first day of free agency, reflecting the level of interest in him by the front office. On the following day, the Golden State Warriors entered the sweepstakes, and the allure of rings and Draymond Green in his ear signaled a tough battle for his services. Yet, here we are on the 4th of July, still searching for the fireworks from Young’s camp, but the wait may soon be over.
Earlier this morning, David Aldridge alerted everyone on social media that the Minnesota Timberwolves were looking at Young. Then emerged news that with a possible Danilo Gallinari sign-and-trade and Jamal Crawford to be waived by the Atlanta Hawks in conjunction, the Warriors would become the favorites to land the former Clippers sharpshooter.
If the scenario unfolds as such, the odds of Nick Young soon ending up in New Orleans are much higher. Besides, wouldn’t the universe have to explode if both Crawford shooting guards donned a Pelicans jerseys at the same time?

Potentially, the Pelicans can offer Nick Young a 4-year deal and around $36 million with the mid level exception, which would mean a salary of $8.4 million next season. The Timberwolves, who are operating under the salary cap line, could create less than $7 million of practical cap space, but they would have to renounce the cap holds of Shabazz Muhammad and Brandon Rush, just to name a few. Or, they could use the room exception, worth approximately $4.3 million for next season.
Do I want to see New Orleans give into offering Young around the maximum number of dollars and years? Absolutely, not! Let’s just hope that Young’s connection to the Wolves is just a last ditch effort by his representation to get Dell Demps to open the wallet a little more because the Warriors have moved on and New Orleans represents his client’s best remaining option.
