“I’m very excited to welcome Chris to the Pelicans organization,” said Head Coach Alvin Gentry. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our coaching staff, and will be an integral part of our program as we move forward.”
We first learned of the planned hiring nearly three weeks ago, but the organization waited until today to make the announcement.
In other news, Phil Weber, who was reportedly on his way out last month, is now being considered for a front office position.
The Pelicans have officially hired Chris Finch and, per league sources, have offered a front-office position to former assistant Phil Weber— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 6, 2017
Chris Finch, as previously reported here, joins Alvin Gentry's staff, but the Pels hope to retain the experienced and versatile Phil Weber— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 6, 2017
Weber has served in some coaching capacity for the last 34 years, entering the profession back in 1984 when he joined the University of Florida as an assistant coach. He has a long history of working with Alvin Gentry, going back to their days together in Phoenix under Mike D’Antoni.
As to why Weber is being considered for a front office position remains a bit of a mystery. Perhaps the front office or ownership is interested in having another well-versed basketball mind involved in the day-to-day decision making process. Maybe Weber’s resume with a focus on offense and/or player development is necessary to balance out the current construction of the front office. Either way, one can be sure Gentry would certainly applaud the move.
