NBA Preview: DeMarcus Cousins should have something special in store for his return to Sacramento

With the Kings blindsiding Boogie last February, it’s Cousins turn to serve a dish of nasty!

The New Orleans Pelicans (1-3) must recover quickly after a tough loss to the Portland Trail Blazers that saw Anthony Davis go down with a knee injury. The Sacramento Kings (1-3) enter the game following a loss to the lowly Phoenix Suns. The question is, will DeMarcus Cousins and possibly the Browless Pelicans have enough firepower to dispel a subpar Kings roster?

One thing is for certain though: expect for Boogie to come out guns blazing! Not only will he be the focal point of the Pelicans offense, but he is also seeing his former team for the first time since the trade last season. With Cousins admitting he “was a fool” for staying loyal to Sacramento for far too long, there is incredible incentive for one of the best bigs in the NBA — hide the children!

Key Matchup

To take some of the focus off of Boogie, Jrue Holiday needs to have that break out game, especially if Davis sits out. Thus far Holiday is averaging a meager 11.3 points and 5.3 assists per game. Need more!

Holiday will have one of the tougher position matchups in this game, going head to head with George Hill and then will likely be asked to cover the Kings’ leading scorer rookie, De’Aaron Fox — yes, he really is already their best scorer.

To his credit, Holiday did hold Damian Lillard to 13 points on 3-16 (1-8 from three). This was likely just an off game for Dame, but at this point, Holiday needs something to hang his hat on and I’m looking out for the guy.

Points of Interest

Sacramento, as most people expected, is not the most explosive offense in the NBA, averaging 96.8 points per game (27th in the NBA), yet the Pelicans haven’t presented the most stifling of defenses either, allowing 111.5 points per game (22nd in the NBA.)

Cousins is going up against the Sacramento Kings and even the NBA knew that it was going to be must see TV, hence why it is airing on TNT Thursday.

Ian Clark has been a bit of a revelation off the bench so far this season, averaging 10.0 points per game in 24.5 minutes. He should soon find his way into a larger role if he continues to play well.

Jameer Nelson will no longer be considered the newest member of the Pelicans as Josh Smith was signed Wednesday by the front office via the hardship exemption. Will J-Smoove prove to be a more beneficial contributor than Cheick Diallo?
