Shawn Dawson, a 6’6’’ swingman, will join the New Orleans Pelicans in training camp next month. He reportedly signed a non-guaranteed deal which isn’t surprising as the Pelicans already have 15 guaranteed contracts for next season. Teams may carry up to 20 players prior to the start of the regular NBA season. Interestingly, Dawson turned down an identical camp invite by the Washington Wizards, the team he played for during last month’s Las Vegas Summer League.
Dawson is a 4-year veteran of the top basketball league in Israel, having played for Maccabi Rishon LeZion. In his final year, he posted averages of 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 53 games. Dawson was a member of the Israeli 2016 All-Star team, but more importantly, he helped Rishon LeZion to their first national championship, chipping in 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the final game.
The most surprising fact about Dawson has to be his age. Although he’s garnered a significant amount of professional experience, he is just 22 years of age — the same age as Buddy Hield.
