New Orleans Pelicans remain in same position, will draft 6th following NBA Lottery results

Could have been better, could have been worse, right Anthony Davis?

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans will pick 6th in the 2016 NBA draft to be held next month. After finishing the regular season with the most games lost to injury, one might have hoped a better fate lay in store after having suffered through so many disappointments over the last year.

Granted, nearly a 1 in 2 chance (43.9%) existed that the Pelicans were going to remain in the same position; conversely, they had close to just a 1 in 5 chance (21.5%) of seizing a top-3 selection.

The last time the Pelicans had the privilege of making a first round pick was back in 2013. Coincidentally at the 6th overall selection, New Orleans chose Nerlens Noel, but the moment was short-lived as he was traded minutes later to the Philadelphia Sixers in a deal for Jrue Holiday.

Of course, it would be remiss to not mention the fortunes from one season prior. Tom Benson bought the team from the NBA and weeks later the then-Hornets organization struck gold by moving up from 4th to 1st in the 2012 NBA draft lottery. Everyone is aware Anthony Davis went first, but were it not for hitting on their 13.7% odds, New Orleans very easily could have walked away with Dion Waiters who was the 4th pick.
