The New Orleans Pelicans announced late this evening that reserve guard Lance Stephenson will have surgery to repair a groin injury. The diagnosis was confirmed earlier today with an MRI. A timetable for Stephenson’s return has not yet been determined.
Immediately following the gut-wrenching loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night Stephenson was candid with reporters stating “We’re not getting the breaks. We’ve just got to get the basketball gods on our side. We have to keep working.”
Clearly Lance Stephenson’s prayers have been heard. Pelican fans are now left to wonder if his sacrifice will be in vain or if just one guard is enough to please these basketball gods. Is one guard, on a mostly unguaranteed contract at that, sufficient to turn the Pelicans “bad luck” on the injury front? Or will their thirst for Pelican blood prove to be substantial for a second (or is it third) consecutive season?
We will see in the coming weeks. Get well soon Mr. Stephenson.
