Pelicans at Spurs Game Thread: New Orleans needs to find another gear in San Antonio

Game #3 of the 2016-17 NBA regular season

NBA: Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans are still in search of their first win, but unlike last season, there exists a notably different vibe among this year’s group.

Anthony Davis has gone full-alien mode and his team has decidedly followed him into the trenches. Each of the two losses have witnessed double-digit deficits, yet the Pelicans never quit, putting themselves in positions to possibly sneak away with comeback wins late in fourth quarters.

As a collective whole, Davis’ surrounding cast has disappointed in a number of statistical categories, but the effort, grit and perseverance are things to build on. Eventually this group of professional athletes should enjoy some success because Buddy Hield, E’Twaun Moore, Solomon Hill and Langston Galloway are not going to combine for a 23.5% field goal percentage the entire season.

Will the breakthrough come against the San Antonio Spurs tonight? Probably not, but it’s been exciting to watch glimpses of the potential on this roster. They play hard, seem to like each other and Davis is legitimately one of the best players in the league right now. The New Orleans Pelicans appear likely to trend positively as the season progresses. Hope, is a beautiful thing.
