Recent updates to two prominent mock drafts, from Draft Express and CBS Sports, have the New Orleans Pelicans selecting Larry Nance Jr. Nance, the son of Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA Dunk Champion Larry Nance, played four years at Wyoming.
A quick look through his Draft Express profile has a number of positives. Standing 6'8.5" in shoes with a 7'1.5" wingspan and 37.5" vertical leap at the NBA Combine Nance Jr. has the physical tools to compete for a roster spot in the league.
Two things reading through that and researching stand out to me. First, he was selected as the co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference. If there is an area the Pelicans need to seek improvement it is on that side of the ball. Second, Nance is a solid shooter, knocking down 77% of his free throw attempts. His form is funky but effective.
There are few sure things to be found at the bottom of the second round. Nance could fail earn substantial minutes in the NBA or become an absolute steal. His combination of NBA legacy, physical tools, and effort are sure to get a shot. Why not in New Orleans?
