Pelicans sign Elliot Williams to 10-day contract

Another wing appears to help New Orleans' backcourt.

Surprise! I was an advocate of this move a couple months ago.Williams is a four-year pro from the University of Memphis, via Duke. This season, he averaged 3.6 points and 0.8 assists for Utah in five games.

Williams isn’t anything special, but I like to think that there’s still some role player potential there. He’s only 25 years old with no real long-term look, other than last season’s 67 games with the Philadelphia 76ers. Bouncing around the league for a few years now, I’m curious if New Orleans could be his home. The backup shooting guard spot has been one of weakness for the Pelicans this season, so good on them for addressing the situation.

Ultimately, the two things that will keep him around the Crescent City is his defense and ability to stretch the floor. In his 25 games in the NBADL with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Williams had a defensive win shares of 1.4, defensive rating of 106 on the number one defense in the league. He also showed off some touch, shooting 38.3% from three on 4.3 attempts per game. Assuming he gets fair playing time to show his skills off, it wouldn’t shock me if he performed well enough to get another contract.

I have a good feeling about this one. Demps has done an excellent job of just finding undervalued players this season and getting some production from them.

Here are some videos of his game.

Welcome to New Orleans, Elliot.
