The New Orleans Pelicans announced this morning that they have waived combo forward Shawne Williams. This was initially reported as a possibility by Yahoo! Sports within an hour of the trade. Injuries to both Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson made keeping Williams (and his unguaranteed contract next year, a potential trade chip) make more sense. Evidently the front office has other plans for their last roster spot as now 14 players are under contract.
Right now three different Pelicans are injured; Anthony Davis (shoulder sprain, more to come), Ryan Anderson (knee sprain, more to come), and Jrue Holiday (stress reaction, out another three weeks). New Orleans, unless they make another 10-day contract signing, will have 11 healthy players available on Monday night against the Toronto Raptors. That marks the beginning of a three game home stand with the Brooklyn Nets visiting on Wednesday and the Miami Heat (on ESPN) on Friday.
Look for Dell Demps and company to seek additional depth on the front line in the coming hours. Remember from last year that even the most mundane signing, like Melvin Ely, can play a role in a much bigger move later on.
