The Pelicans were very much in the game against the Mavericks on Saturday, but they were unable to match the energy of Dallas in the second half. Dirk Nowitzki got hot, the Pelicans cooled, and the end result was a 65-50 second-half thrashing. The fourth quarter in particular stood out as Dallas made 13 of 19 shots, good for a 73.7 eFG%. YUCK!
Nikkoewan touched on several good keys to the game in the main preview, but I have to add the Pelicans are going to need to get some production from Alexis Ajinca, one of Luke Babbitt or Dante Cunningham, or preferably all three. The small forward position has been an early house of horrors as elaborated in here, hence why Jimmer Fredette joining the team via the hardship exception is a bit of a head-scratcher.
Does this mean that either Smith or Douglas are on their way out or will the Pelicans look to push the pace further and give Eric Gordon more time at small forward?
I'm not sure of the plan, but then again, that is assuming the Pelicans have one. Their injury list has sprung so many leaks all at once that there might be no logical way of saving the Titanic at this point.
However, let's disregard the outcomes of the previous six games for the time being. Dallas is beatable and New Orleans should be desperate enough to give an effort similar to what the Atlanta Hawks recently witnessed.
