Bird Feed: Mascot Naming Contest and More!

Reading material before the last preseason game.

Leading off, the Pelicans are running a competition to name the soon to be released mascot.  Details can be found here.  Jacque, Pete, Pierre, Parrish, and Seymour are our options.  Alliteration seems to be the direction but three different choices could lead to an upset by Jacque or Seymour.

ProBasketball Talk released their preview of the Pelicans today.  I commend them for being able to write an entire article without resorting to the phrase "win now".

Such a fate, however, was shunned by Yahoo's "Ball Don't Lie" preview.  In a new record, they got the phrase in within the first sentence!  Other highlights include Robin Lopez and Greivis Vasquez being referred to as "competent", bashing Jrue Holiday, assuming the Pelicans gave away a surefire All-Star in next year's pick, and calling Tyreke Evans unneeded.  It is truly a tour de force of every short sighted national media concept we have been tortured with this summer.  I should note, that's only the first four paragraphs!

John Reid for the Times-Picayune wrote an interesting article on AD's offseason.

"I haven't taken any time off since I got drafted," said Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in 2012 out of Kentucky. "But you've got to sacrifice if you want to be great. I want to be a great player in this league, not just a good one or someone that was good for only a few years or so. I want to be one of the guys they talk about for a long time."

To make it happen, Davis added 10 pounds of muscle to his 6-foot-10 frame, which now carries 230 pounds. Davis' honing of his skills and stronger body have resulted in marked improvement through the preseason. In four of the first six exhibition games, Davis scored 21, 25, 29 and 23 points. Last season he averaged 13.5 points per game.

Lastly, Nakia Hogan put up an article on Tom Benson's direction of the franchise.  Notably, Tom Benson is quoted as saying, "(Coach) Monty (Williams), Dell and Mickey have built a nice roster for this season. We have a young, talented team and I am looking forward to watching them grow together this season." Nothing quite says "win now" like "grow together this season".  Don't you think?
