Preseason Game 8: Pelicans at Magic

New, comments
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Last game of the preseason folks and it tips off at 6:00 PM central. Once again, FSNO will not be broadcasting the game, but one should be able to find it somewhere (as FSFL will).

Starting lineups:

Pelicans: Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Al-Farouq Aminu, Anthony Davis, Greg Steimsma

Magic: Victor Oladipo, Arron Afflalo, Maurice Harkless, Andrew Nicholson, Nikola Vucevic

Some important pregame bullets:

- Tyreke Evans will be making his return tonight. Per Jim Eichenhofer:

Monty Williams said in his pregame media availability that Tyreke Evans will play tonight. Williams would like to use Evans on the floor for at least some stretches in a combination with guards Jrue Holiday and Eric Gordon. Williams also said we’ll some of the duo of Ryan Anderson with Anthony Davis.

- Coach Williams recently admitted the center production has been subpar:

``We haven’t gotten the kind of production that we would like to get,’’ Williams said. ``But I’m going to temper that because we haven’t played a lot of games together. I’m not going to put all that on one guy.

``It’s hard to come into our system as a center. The centers we have don’t have a back-down post-up game, so their production is going to be limited from a statistical standpoint. But I see the good stuff that they do.’’

Williams said Stiemsma has done of a number of things he values that don’t show up on the stat sheet. However, he didn’t disclose what they are. After seven preseason games, Stiemsma’s 1.1 scoring average is the lowest on the Pelicans' roster.

Stiemsma, 6 feet 11, 260 pounds, has taken only eight shots and has gone scoreless twice. The most he's scored is two points, which he's done in four of the previous seven preseason games.

He was signed as free agent this summer because of his defensive capabilities, but he has only three blocks.

In seven games, Greg Steimsma's totals are 8 points, 18 rebounds, 8 assists, 7 turnovers, 2 steals, 3 blocks and 18 personal fouls. I don't care what anyone says, there is just no way to spin that into a positive, so don't even try Monty.

What's more unusual is the fact that Jeff Withey has received a total of under 16 minutes of playing time. When guys like Vitor Faverani and Steven Adams are surprising many on their respected teams, why isn't our recently acquired 23 year old getting a longer look?

- Everyone needs to head on over to Pelicans.com. Currently, there is a poll open to the public which will ultimately decide the name of our new mascot. Your choices: Jacque, Pete, Pierre, Parrish and Seymour. So please, GO VOTE!

- Hey, everyone always can make room for another Anthony Davis article. Although many of us are well aware of Davis' stringent off-season program, did you know Shaquille O'Neal has given his two cents?

"He's the big man of today. But I don't want to say he's not my type of big man because that sounds disrespectful. He's the big man of today. He's more like the Dirk Nowitzki-styled big man," said O'Neal, alluding to the way the role of frontcourt players has evolved in the NBA.
