Joel Embiid Breaks Foot; Top of Draft is Chaos

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas center Joel Embiid -- by many accounts, atop Cleveland's draft board yesterday -- reportedly has a broken right foot.

That puts forwards Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins into far stronger contention for the #1 overall pick, while the Australian Dante Exum could emerge as a darkhorse candidate there too. Also of note is A-Woj's report that Milwaukee, picking at #2, is the only other team that currently has access to Embiid's medical with Cleveland. Finally, there's talk that Embiid's injury occurred pre-Cleveland workout and that he was showcased for the Cavs with a broken foot, without realizing it till doctors later discovered the fracture.

What does this do for the Pelicans? At the moment, not too much. Rumors of New Orleans trading back into the first round have yet to materialize, and it's doubtful this affects the draft beyond, say, the 6th or 7th pick, still likely Embiid's floor. Could this affect other arcs like the ostensibly league-wide pursuit of Kevin Love though? Absolutely. A consensus #1 mock pick slipping is something to keep our eyes on for sure.
