Game Preview: Pelicans vs. Suns

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

It's the final countdown as we've got five games to go before we're deprived of basketball again. First up, the Suns. They are currently slotted 8th in the Western Conference standings, 1 game ahead of the Grizzlies but only 1 game behind the Mavericks.

No doubt Phoenix will bring their A game. They're 8-2 in their last 10 and they've been clicking on all cylinders. Eric Bledsoe recently returned from injury, Goran Dragic has maintained his stellar play and several role players (Markieff Morris, Gerald Green and PJ Tucker) have been outstanding. I probably speak for many, it'd be nice to see this surprising team get into the post-season.

3 things to watch:

  • The face of the franchise. Anthony Davis hasn't been right for awhile now, attempting to battle through a myriad of pains and injuries. He is to be commended for his efforts but it'd be nice to see him back close to 100%. Otherwise, for the 82nd time, I'd rather see the Pelicans give him a few more days off.
  • A-Mo's shooting percentage. Over the last 11 games, he has shot an even 50% from the floor. If his fine finish to the season leads another team giving him an overwhelming offer, it'll be another reason to perhaps hate on Eric Gordon.
  • Death of the 3-Headed Monster. Over the same 11 games, Greg Stiemsma has averaged 16.6 minutes, Alexis Ajinca 18.6 minutes and Jeff Withey 13.4 minutes. We know the Pelicans are in evaluation mode but I don't care much for the even split in playing time. There are clearly players who need it while others not so much. Let's see if Monty can get it right.
