Per Marc Stein tonight:
Heard rumble tonight Pels on verge of re-signing Lou Amundson; agent Mark Bartelstein just confirmed vet F indeed headed back to New Orleans
Well, well. It appears Dell Demps has had a change of heart regarding the depth of the frontcourt. On opening night, during an interview on the Fox Sports New Orleans pre-game show, he stated that he was quite happy with our big man depth -- in fact, he considered it to be a position of strength. At the time, both Brian and I laughed it off as Dell just toeing the line. Indeed.
Currently, the Pelicans have a full roster, so one of our unguaranteed players will likely receive the dreaded pink slip. The most obvious choice is Arinze Onuaku, whose first year is fully unguaranteed with no guarantee date. He has appeared in just three games and nothing significant since the second game of the season.
With news of other teams (namely the Knicks) expressing interest, the underwhelming play of the backups (Greg Stiemsma and Onuaku) and Ryan Anderson's recent mild setback, the Pelican's front office probably felt the pressure to close the deal.
Welcome back Sweet Lou!
UPDATE: Amundson is coming aboard, but Lance Thomas appears to be the roster casualty:
Thank you New Orleans and Pelicans organization for everything. My time in New Orleans has been beyond great, and I'm going to miss it.
Good luck to Lance Thomas in his future endeavors!
Update #2: Per Adrian Wojnarowski:
New Orleans has reached agreement with free agent forward Josh Childress, league source tells Yahoo Sports.
By all appearances, it looks like the front office will be swapping out Lance Thomas and Arinze Onuaku for Lou Amundson and Josh Childress. No, the moves weren't not made to improve our Championship odds, but there appeared to be an urgent need to shakeup the roster. Stay tuned!
