2012 Free Agents

Now that the trade has taken place, and it appears we will need to fill our roster with some Free Agents, here is a list of what we have to work with. Much like the draft, it will depend on what you feel our biggest need is to determine who we look at in free agency. I believe we need an upgrade at the SF and C position. I believe bringing back Kaman would be our best option at the C. I also think bringing back Carl Landry would be a big help to the team. If Landry is too expensive, I wouldn't mind going after Brandon Bass back to the Big Easy. The SF is a bit tricky, because there isn't much to look at in free agency. The guys at the 3 position who I like in the draft, such as Moe Harkless, will likely be too high to take at 10. I also don't feel there are any centers worth taking at 10, besides Drummond if he slides.

I have heard some on the boards mention that we shouldn't go after free agents, and don't take a "win now" approach. I think this is both short-sighted and foolish. If you clarify that by saying we shouldn't take on lengthy, expensive contracts, then yes it makes sense. But we need to add some players to fill holes and add depth for a couple seasons. And just because we are young does not mean we should not look to win, as long as it is not at the expense of developing our young players.

So here is a list of the FA. At the bottom is the Restricted players and guys with a team/player option for the season, since I don't feel we need to get in bidding wars for those players. I also left some names off the list, such as Mickell Gladness of Golden State, because I can't see us pursuing those players.

PG: Jack/Vasquez

SG: Gordon/Henry

SF: Aminu

PF: Davis/Ayon

C: Smith
A few names I wouldn't mind looking at are Gerald Green, Nick Young, Deshawn Stevenson, and Matt Barnes. Young could be a nice shooter off the bench. The other 3 have potential to play the 2 and 3, provide solid defense, and possibly at a bargain price.

Possible Depth:

PG: Jack/Vasquez

SG: Gordon/Henry

SF: Aminu/(G. Green/M. Barnes)

PF: Davis/ (Landry/Bass)/Ayon

C: Kaman/Smith

And don't forget our 10 and 47 pick, who could potentially be a starter and good role player.

Again, I'm not looking at free agency as a long term solution. But if we can get some guys for a reasonable price at 1-2 year contracts, I think we can be a playoff team this season, with potential for more in the years to follow.
