This is new for me so here it goes. I was looking at stats about the hornets, and I found something interesting that has been happening with our defense over the last couple games. It is interesting since I was actually looking to find out how many fast break points our team gets per game. We are near the bottom in fast-break points. More after the jump.
So many of you will say we have a half court game, that is understandable but if we don't run a little teams don't have the kind of urgency to run back because they know we will be walking it up. Here's the numbers.
New Orleans (35-28) 11.3 points per game.
We are the third lowest in fast-break points for the season, and over the last three games we are in the bottom two with 6.7 points per game.
Now, I know many of you might say that most of the good teams are slow-paced and play the half court game but this is not always true. There are some like the Orlando Magic and LA Lakers that are close to us at 11.5 and 11.6 fast break points per game but they also have a set system based around a concept. For the Magic it is an inside out game, using Dwight as the main target, and the triangle as the concept in LA with Pau and Kobe being the facilitators. There are also teams that are playoff contenders who do score in the fast-break. Some are Oklahoma City, San Antonio(I was surprised to see this), Houston and Miami, with 16, 15.2, 15, and 14.8 respectively. So There are different playoff teams that get different amounts of fast-break points. I guess what I am saying is that because we play half court doesn't mean we can't get fast break points, example The Spurs. We also do not have a real offensive concept to follow in the half court, (it used to be paul slashes then pops it out). We have the tools to run, we just don't especially the last 3 games. To only get 6.7 points on the fast break is putrid.
The other thing that popped out to me was the way we are getting scored on these past three games compared to the season. First, while we have a good defense, it is our 3 point defense that is good for the season we have a 34.8% 3 point rate which is in the top 10 but over the past three we have given up 43.1%. Our two-point defense has been average for the season at 48.3% but just above 50% over the past three. I am not sure how great our defense was, but if it was a mix of good defense and a really slow pace that has made our team effective. Unfortunately, our team has not played good defense over the last three, and before that, so we have been struggling. We need to mix our slow pace with a little more fast break points and tighten up on our three point defense
